Mayflower Hits West End Live 2019!

On Saturday 22nd June we journeyed up to London to see the best of West End theatre slap bang in the middle of Trafalgar Square. West End Live is like a mini festival full of snippets of live musical theatre show performances; so it’s like a little taster of the best of the West End. We were really excited as a lot of these shows performing are coming soon to Mayflower Theatre over the next year so we wanted to share this with you.

Best applause: Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

There were definitely some hard core Jamie fans watching this and I think this converted us. The music and energy were definitely the things that we remember from this. The original score of catchy pop tunes as written by lead singer-songwriter of The Feeling, Dan Gillespie Sells, so no wonder! We got to see a performance of this in the evening, review is coming up soon!

Best to get people dancing: On Your Feet!

We conga’d along to this energetic performance of the new musical, it was so much fun! It brought the Cuban vibe to the streets of London (and soon to Southampton – we need to start a conga down Commercial Road!). You couldn’t not dance, everyone around us was really enjoying it. We were surprised by how many songs that we knew by Gloria Estefan, the Rhythm definitely got us.

Best for dramatic singing: Les Miserables

You couldn’t move for everyone getting out their phones for this whole set, especially for One Day More. Everyone put on their best singing voices and really gave it some – it has such a power over people and at one point everyone had their arms around each other like we were all going to go over the barricade and join in on stage. This seemed to be the best known and loved – we’re really excited for October

Best to sing-a-long to: Mamma Mia!

Here we go again, not one person in the crowd didn’t know the words to all of the Abba tunes. Such a great atmosphere with such fun vibrant costumes and insane dancing. It perked the crowd up and gave a little boost of energy – see one of the boomerangs on our insta-stories for a brilliant arm-waving moment.

Best fan club: Six

There were definitely some hardcore fans in the crowd for this one – they knew every word and gave it some sass as well as the star performers did. Being a new musical, it has definitely got some mega catchy tunes (think Eurovision, Spice Girls and Beyoncé sprinkled with some added sass, all rolled into one). When we left we downloaded the playlist straight away, we can’t wait til it gets here next May!

It was such a brilliant day (unfortunately we couldn’t make the Sunday) full of fun, great live performance and there’s something to be said for being surrounded by a brilliant crowd as passionate about theatre as we are.

By following our Twitter and Instagram you can see for yourself some little snippets of the performances and hopefully something will take your fancy and we’ll see you in the theatre soon.
