Interview the Creatives: Mayflower Theatre Summer Youth Project - Writer & Director

Ahead our upcoming Summer Youth Theatre’s production of Peter Pan – An Awfully Big Musical Adventure we've been speaking to the Creative Team behind the project. Did you know that the theatre's Chief Executive Michael Ockwell gets involved every year as writer and director of the project!

Tell us a bit about your background:

I was originally an actor and moved into theatre management in 1999. I am lucky in that I have been able to have a career in an industry that I love. I have directed 11 youth projects in several regional theatres and am committed to offering as many young people as possible the opportunity to experience the joy of live theatre. Theatre is life affirming and the project aims to not only develop an interest in performing but help in developing all important life skills such as confidence, the value of team work and the power of creativity.

Where do you get your ideas from? Do you have any tips on creativity?

My ideas come from the people I meet and talk to while carrying out my role as Chief Executive of the theatre. I am fortunate that I work in a creative industry so I am constantly liaising with inspirational people who care passionately about what they do - I include the staff in that group as their commitment and energy inspires me to be the very best I can be in my role. My tip is be open to every and any conversation as you can always learn.

What do you like best about working on the Summer Youth Project?

I love the commitment from the team in the theatre - there is a real ownership of the project and a tremendous sense of pride in what we do to help generate an interest in the performing arts. Every single member of staff can have a positive impact on a young person no matter what role they play on project. This is a total team effort.

In three words, what can the audience expect from this year’s production of Peter Pan?

A Big Adventure

Mayflower Theatre Summer Youth Project performs on the 16th and 17th of August.
